Root Diversity
Root diversity is a fascinating topic in the field of botany. The root system of a flowering plant can be classified into three types: taproot system, fibrous root system, and adventitious root system¹. Each of these root systems has its own unique characteristics and functions. For example, the taproot system is characterized by a single, thick root that grows deep into the soil, while the fibrous root system is composed of many small, branching roots that grow shallowly in the soil¹.
There are many ways to measure root diversity, including root morphological and anatomical properties, root capacitance, and root length density¹⁴. A study conducted on wheat species from different ploidy levels revealed that significant genotypic differences were observed for most root traits, and the investigated genotypes exploited different strategies to maximize soil water depletion
